{"id":2324,"date":"2026-08-16T15:37:14","date_gmt":"2026-08-16T15:37:14","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/chineseledlight.com\/?p=2324"},"modified":"2026-08-16T15:40:29","modified_gmt":"2026-08-16T15:40:29","slug":"led-binning-sdcm","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/chineseledlight.com\/pt\/led-binning-sdcm\/","title":{"rendered":"SDCM &amp; LED Binning: Prevent Color Mismatch in Commercial Projects"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">LED binning is one of the most important controls to prevent visible color mismatch in commercial lighting projects.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cBoth are 3000K.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">That sentence has caused more ugly ceilings than it should.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Two commercial luminaires can carry the same nominal CCT, the same CRI, the same wattage and even the same LED brand, yet one looks slightly green, another slightly pink, and a third appears noticeably warmer once all three are installed in the same visual field.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Same label. Different light.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">And when hundreds of fittings are lined up across a hotel lobby, retail floor, office corridor or 30-meter linear run, tiny chromaticity differences that seemed harmless on a factory bench suddenly become painfully obvious because the human eye is exceptionally good at comparing adjacent white sources.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Why does this happen?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Usually because buyers specify&nbsp;<strong>3000K<\/strong>&nbsp;when what they actually need to control is&nbsp;<strong>chromaticity variation<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">That means understanding&nbsp;<strong>LED binning, SDCM, MacAdam ellipses, Duv, batch consistency and production change control<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Here&#8217;s the ugly truth: \u201c3000K \u00b1 something\u201d is often a weak procurement specification.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">I want tighter evidence.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" a Neighborhood, Not an Exact Address<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">But first, forget the idea that every 3000K LED emits exactly the same white.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Correlated Color Temperature\u2014CCT\u2014is a useful shorthand for describing whether white light appears warmer or cooler.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">You already know the familiar values:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>2700K<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>3000K<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>3500K<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>4000K<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>5000K<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>6500K<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">What buyers sometimes miss is that&nbsp;<strong>CCT doesn&#8217;t uniquely describe chromaticity<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Two light sources can have very similar CCT values and still sit on opposite sides of the blackbody locus, creating visually different tints.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">One may lean slightly greenish.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Another slightly pink or magenta.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Same CCT.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">That is where&nbsp;<strong>Duv<\/strong>&nbsp;enters the conversation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">ANSI updated its solid-state-lighting chromaticity standard in 2024.&nbsp;<strong>ANSI C78.377-2024<\/strong>&nbsp;defines recommended chromaticity ranges for general solid-state lighting and added nominal&nbsp;<strong>2000K and 1800K<\/strong>&nbsp;regions to the existing set of white-light CCTs.&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/blog.ansi.org\/ansi\/ansi-c78-377-2024-solid-state-lighting\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">ANSI&#8217;s 2024 summary of C78.377<\/a>&nbsp;explains the revision.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">That standard exists because \u201cwhite\u201d needs coordinates.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Not adjectives.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 id=\"what-led-binning-actually-means\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">What LED Binning Actually Means<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Imagine manufacturing millions of LEDs.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Even when chips are produced from the same process, the resulting devices won&#8217;t all have perfectly identical:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>luminous flux<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>forward voltage<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>chromaticity<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>CCT<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Duv<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>sometimes other performance characteristics<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">So manufacturers sort them.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">That&#8217;s&nbsp;<strong>LED binning<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Think of bins as sorting buckets.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">LEDs with sufficiently similar characteristics are grouped together so luminaire manufacturers can build products with controlled output and color behavior.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Sounds simple.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It isn&#8217;t.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Because a fixture manufacturer can buy:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>a very tight chromaticity bin<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>several neighboring bins<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>a broader binning range<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>mixed lots across production periods<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Those purchasing decisions affect what your finished ceiling looks like.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">And tighter bins tend to create procurement pressure because you&#8217;re restricting what portion of LED production is acceptable.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">That&#8217;s physics meeting purchasing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 id=\"sdcm-is-the-language-buyers-actually-need\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">SDCM Is the Language Buyers Actually Need<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">SDCM stands for:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Standard Deviation of Color Matching<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In commercial lighting, people commonly describe this using&nbsp;<strong>MacAdam steps<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">You&#8217;ll hear:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>1 SDCM<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>2 SDCM<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>3 SDCM<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>5 SDCM<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>7 SDCM<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Lower number?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Tighter chromaticity variation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Very perception.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Viewing distance matters.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Surface colors matter.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Optics matter.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Adaptation matters.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">And adjacent sources make differences easier to spot.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">But commercially?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>3 SDCM is a useful number to know.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Very useful.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 id=\"why-3-step-macadam-keeps-appearing-in-real-project-specifications\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">Why 3-Step MacAdam Keeps Appearing in Real Project Specifications<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Here&#8217;s where the theory becomes procurement reality.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In February 2024, the Battery Park City Authority&#8217;s Pier A construction specification required each luminaire type to be binned within a&nbsp;<strong>three-step MacAdam ellipse<\/strong>&nbsp;to maintain color consistency between luminaires.&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/media.bpca.ny.gov\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/02\/14095741\/Pier-A-Construction-Management-Services_Final-RFP.pdf\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">See the 2024 Pier A project specification<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Not seven-step.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Three.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Later in 2024, a New York State Office of General Services project specification used essentially the same requirement: each luminaire type was to be binned within a&nbsp;<strong>three-step MacAdam ellipse<\/strong>&nbsp;for fixture-to-fixture consistency.&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/online2.ogs.ny.gov\/dncaddenda\/45998\/Addendum%2001%20CPE.pdf\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">See the November 2024 OGS project addendum<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">And a 2024 New York City project presentation for&nbsp;<strong>125 Chambers Street \/ 95 West Broadway<\/strong>&nbsp;specified&nbsp;<strong>3-step MacAdam ellipse<\/strong>&nbsp;color consistency for the lighting products shown.&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.nyc.gov\/assets\/lpc\/downloads\/pdf\/presentation-materials\/20240813\/125-Chambers-Street.pdf\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">See the NYC project material<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Three separate public-project documents.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Same idea.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Why?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Because fixture-to-fixture color mismatch looks cheap.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Even when the fixtures weren&#8217;t.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 id=\"what-a-macadam-ellipse-is-without-turning-this-into-a-color-science-lecture\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">What a MacAdam Ellipse Is \u2014 Without Turning This Into a Color-Science Lecture<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Picture chromaticity plotted on a color diagram.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Now choose one target white point.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Around that point, you can draw regions representing progressively larger color differences.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The original MacAdam work showed that human sensitivity to chromaticity differences isn&#8217;t uniform across color space, so those just-noticeable regions aren&#8217;t perfect circles.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">They&#8217;re ellipses.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">One step is tight.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Three steps cover a larger region.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Five steps larger still.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Seven?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Much broader.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This is why saying:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>3000K \u00b1150K<\/strong><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">isn&#8217;t equivalent to saying:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>3000K, 3 SDCM<\/strong><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Kelvin alone moves largely along the CCT direction.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Chromaticity can also move perpendicular to the blackbody locus.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">That&#8217;s where green-pink tint becomes important.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 id=\"duv-is-the-number-nobody-in-purchasing-wants-to-talk-about\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">Duv Is the Number Nobody in Purchasing Wants to Talk About<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">But Duv matters.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A simplified interpretation:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Positive Duv<\/strong>&nbsp;\u2192 chromaticity lies above the blackbody locus, often perceived as greener.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Negative Duv<\/strong>&nbsp;\u2192 below the locus, often perceived as more pink\/magenta.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Imagine these two sources:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Fixture A<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>CCT: 3020K<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Duv: +0.004<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Fixture B<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>CCT: 2990K<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Duv: -0.003<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Their CCT values are only 30K apart.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Yet visually?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">They may not look like a convincing match.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">That&#8217;s why I get suspicious when a supplier answers a color-consistency question with:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cDon&#8217;t worry, all 3000K.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">That&#8217;s not enough.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"768\" differences.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">But adjacent luminaires can look wrong even when their apparent warmth is similar.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">One looks slightly green.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">One looks slightly rosy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">People may not know the language to describe it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">They&#8217;ll say:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThat lamp looks strange.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Or:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThose two colors aren&#8217;t the same.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">And they&#8217;re right.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This is particularly ugly in:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>white retail ceilings<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>luxury hotels<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>galleries<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>fashion stores<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>cosmetic counters<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>office corridors<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>wall washers<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>continuous linear lighting<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>large track-light installations<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Put twenty luminaires into one sight line and the problem amplifies.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 id=\"linear-lighting-is-brutal-on-bad-binning\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">Linear Lighting Is Brutal on Bad Binning<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A standalone downlight can hide a small mismatch.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A continuous linear system?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Merciless.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Imagine a 12-meter suspended run built from multiple modules.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Module 1: slightly below target Duv.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Module 2:
